Before I decide on my final approach and medium for my alphabet chart.

Firstly I wanted to experiment with putting a single image of the object/animal beside the letter using hand drawn illustration. For this experiment I chose to use the letter T and represent this by using an elephant which is "Tembo" in Swahili. I chose a serif Capital letter T. I am choosing to stick with capital letters as these seem to be most predominant in the alphabet charts I have looked at. In the future I would like to incorporate a lower case alphabet aswell but for this project and timescale I will simply stick to capitals. I hand illustrated an elephant in pencil then added the letter. I chose to add sunset themed colours to the letter to warm it up and relate to the african environment. Although I am pleased with the outcome, I believe that adding a variety of the same object/animal will help the children identify it easier. This will include different angles, head shots, full body shots and for object like fruit it will include cross sections and texture etc.

Next I wanted to take a more digital approach and experiment with Photoshop and double exposure photography. For this experiment I was going to use my own first hand photos of elephants from my time in Tanzania but I wanted to get a variety of results and so I chose to use the letter L and the imagery of lemons for the swahili word "limau". Below is the result of my experiment. Although I liked the result to an extent, I think it should be more illustrative if it is to be displayed in a childrens classroom as this will catch their attention more. I am also going to abandon this idea because I would have to or prefer to use my own photographs and for many of the letters this will be difficult as I am choosing imagery relative to Swahili speaking countries that they will recognise. I can't exactly photograph baboons in my back garden....and so, next idea!

Next I took inspiration from artists styles I have researched in my earlier posts and used the imagery as a block background, for this I chose the letter to represent eggs, in swahili "Yai". I chose duck egg blue to bring brightness and colour to the illustration and left the letter itself as negative space as to not distract the viewers eye. I thought this experiment was successful to an extent but the imagery is to crowded and over whelming and the letter seems somewhat disconnected. I used washed out acrylic paint for this piece. I have decided to stick to hand drawn and acrylic paint for my final medium.
